How to make a website: 6 steps from idea to launch

A practical path for a small business website: set goals, choose a domain, hosting and platform, plan the content, build and test, then launch and keep it maintained.

Whether you build the site yourself or work with a web studio, the same six steps apply. Skipping the first ones is the most common reason websites take longer, cost more and bring fewer enquiries than expected.

Step 1: Define the goal and the audience

Write down what the website must achieve – enquiries, bookings, online sales, or information – and who it is for. These two answers decide the structure, the content and the features.

Step 2: Choose a domain and hosting

Step 3: Choose the platform

Website builders

Quick and simple, with a monthly subscription. Limited flexibility, and moving away later can be hard.

WordPress

The most widely used content management system. Flexible, with themes and plugins for almost anything; needs updates and maintenance.

Custom development

Built from scratch for specific needs. Most flexible, usually the most expensive and slowest to change.

Step 4: Plan the structure and content

Step 5: Design, build and test

Step 6: Launch and maintain
